Creating Soil Type Map on ArcGIS & shapefile download
ArcGIS is an essential and widely used software for doing Spatial data analysis. There are variety of operations that could be done with ArcGIS, like raster data analysis, map processing, map simulation etc. Today we are going to discuss about how to make a “Soil classification map” or “Soil type map” with ArcGIS. Data download link of shapefile is also given here.
Steps to follow for generating Soil Type Map:
The steps to create a soil type map on ArcGIS is given here in short. Follow the steps:
- Download the “Soil map” shape file and pdf file from fao.org website.(Download from here)
- Open the shape file on ArcMap.
- Open the attribute table of the shape file.
- Click the last column of the attribute table (Country) and sort it to ascending.
- Then select your desired country from the attribute table.
- Export the selected and assign it to a new layer.
- Set the color ramp.
Downloading soil classification shapefile:
The first work you have to do is to download the proper vector file for soil classification. The website fao.org provides you such data of soil from all over the world. The website will give you the free access of their data. you just have to download the data. Download the shapefile format data as ArcGIS supports shapefile data.
Working with shapefile and attribute table, soil map making:
Open the shape file on ArcMAP. Then open the attribute table. There will be some data like: FID, SNUM, Shape, FAOSOIL, DIMSOI,…., COUNTRY. Different column is for different work. For extracting out targeted area we nee “COUNTRY” column. And for Symbiology we will need “DIMSOI” data.
Now for getting our targeted area we will click on the country column and sort it ascending. This will make the selection process easier. Now select the targeted area. For showing purpose I am selecting ‘BARBADOS’.
Now after exporting selected data into new layer, we will go to the layer properties and then change the symbology into “unique values” under category [Properties > Symbology > Category > Unique Values] . Then set your click on “Add all values” and set you desired color ramp.
Now insert neat line, grid, legends and export the map. That’s it…!
