The amazing Drip Irrigation system

Irrigation is the must needed action done during agricultural process and it simultaneously important. Among various irrigation process, drip irrigation is newest addition to the list. So we will now discuss about this:

Drip Irrigation

Drip or trickle irrigation is one of the latest method of irrigation which is becoming increasingly popular in areas with water scarcity and salt problems. It is a method of watering plants repeatedly and with a volume of water approaching the consumptive use of the plants, thus reducing such conventional losses as runoff, deep percolation and soil water evaporation. Water is drip gradually to the plant’s root, either buried below the surface or from above the ground surface. The goal is to minimize evaporation and place water directly into the root zone. Drip irrigation systems distribute water through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters. Depending on how well designed, installed and maintained and operated it is, a drip irrigation system can be more efficient than other types of irrigation systems, such as surface irrigation or sprinkler irrigation.

The advantages of drip irrigation are:

  1. Fertilizer and nutrient loss is minimized due to a localized application and reduced leaching.
  2. Water application efficiency is high if managed correctly.
  3. Field leveling is not necessary.
  4. Farmers can easily accommodate fields with irregular shapes.
  5. Farmers can Recycled non-potable water.
  6. Moisture within the root zone can be maintained at field capacity.
  7. Soil type plays a less important role in the frequency of irrigation.
  8. Soil erosion and weed growth decreases.
  9. Water distribution is highly uniform, controlled by the output of each nozzle.
  10. Labor cost is less than other irrigation methods and that can be great for farmers.
  11. Farmer can regulate variation in supply by regulating the valves and drippers.
  12. Farmers can include fertigation easily with minimal waste of fertilizers.
  13. Foliage remains dry, reducing the risk of disease.
  14. Usually operated at lower pressure than other types of pressurized irrigation and also reduces energy costs.

The disadvantages of drip irrigation are:

  1.  Initial cost can be more than overhead systems.
  2. The sun can affect the tubes used for such irrigation, shortening their lifespan.
  3. In case of low maintenance and it can result in clogging or biologging.
  4. This irrigation might be unsatisfactory if herbicides or top dressed fertilizers need sprinkler irrigation for activation.
  5. Drip tape causes extra cleanup costs after harvest.
  6. Waste of water, time and harvest, if not installed properly.
  7. In lighter soils subsurface drip may be unable to wet the soil surface for germination. Requires careful consideration of the installation depth.
  8. Salt problem may arise.
  9. The PVC pipes often suffer from rodent damage.
  10. Farmers don’t use drip irrigation systems for damage control by night frosts.
